UNECE / FAO Forest Communicators Network – Annual Meeting in Oslo - Norway 20-22 May 2019

This meeting took place from 20nd to 22nd of May 2019 in Oslo (Norway) at the Felix Conference Centre.
28 members of the FCN-Network from Europe, Canada and Northern America attended the meeting.
On behalf of UEF, our Secretary Thomas Baschny attended the meeting. He presented the annual report about the activities and achievements of the FCN Sub Group Forest Pedagogics and he implemented the UEF position in the discussions.
The FCN network started 1992 in Rio de Janeiro with the overall objective to help the Forest Sector to communicate. Nowadays, the network consists of 200 members from 40 Countries. (40 Governmental Organizations and NGO´s). Also Global Coordination Groups in 6 regions are working worldwide.
The Chair of FCN Kai Lintunen underlined the importance of such an network. The International day of forests on 21st of March 2019 was under the title “Forest and Education”. The International day of forests 2020 will be under the title “Biodiversity”. A lot of activities (especially in Geneva and Rome) in Europe are foreseen.
The European Forest Week 2019 will take place from 4th to 8th of November in Geneva together with FORET 2019 with the topic “Forests and the Circular Economy”.
During the two days - meeting, the participants shared their experience, ideas and further plans on communication. Short workshops collected the ideas and further steps.
So important things are to promote sustainable forest management, using wood and other products made of wood (Bioeconomy – link: http://www.smy.fi/en/forest-bioeconomy-future-catalogue), the better (and positive) image of Foresters and of our sector. In addition, Cooperation’s with other sectors are necessary. The link to the North American Campaign is: http://www.itsallyours.us(“Will you go out with me?” / “Wood is good!”)
The 25th IUFRO Congress will take place from 29th September to 5th October 2019 in Curitiba (Brazil). The 26th IUFRO Congress 2024 is foreseen in Stockholm (Sweden).
The hosting country for the next FCN meeting 2020 is open.
